Have you ever wondered how the teams responding to natural disasters know what to do? The answer is—in Switzerland, at least—they practice. Three times a year, the military barracks (Kaserne) in Bern becomes a training ground for Swiss Army officers learning to direct the response to a natural catastrophe. The grounds of the Kaserne are filled with the equipment they have at their disposal: saws, generators, pumps, cameras, first-aid supplies—even a fully equipped mobile operating room. Officers are given a scenario based on the massive flooding that occurred in Bern’s Matte neighborhood in 2005, and must plan their response.

On Monday, April 30, 2012, from 6:25 to 9:30 p.m., the American Women’s Club of Bern has organized an English-language tour of the area in conjunction with a German-language tour for officers. The event will begin with an Introduction by Colonel General Staff Daniel Escher, Commander of the Unit Leadership School, and a video produced by the Army, continue with a guided tour, and conclude with an Army-sponsored apéro.

Space is limited and the minimum age is 10. By tram: take Tram 9 direction Guisanplatz to the stop Breitenrain and walk down Herzogstrasse one block to the park entrance. Parking is available on-site for registrees; enter on Kasernenstrasse and ring at the barrier. To register, send an email with your name, the number of people attending, and whether you will need a parking space, to programs@awcbern.org.

The deadline for sign-up is 10 days before the event: Friday, April 20.
